FOR PAIMIO SANATORIUM RESIDENTS
The residence is located in the exceptional surroundings of the Paimio Sanatorium, considered as one of the most important examples of modern architecture.
Completed in 1933, Paimio Sanatorium, a former tuberculosis sanatorium designed by Finnish architects Alvar and Aino Aalto, soon received critical acclaim both in Finland and abroad. The project has been canonized as an internationally recognized masterpiece of modern architecture. Aaltos’ greatest achievement was to incorporate a distinctly human dimension into their landmark project by bringing their own unique take on the architectural style of the time. Paimio Sanatorium continues to radiate a profound sense of empathy.
There are very few places where the most important creative disciplines meet in a perfect balance. Architecture, design, art and science are thoughtfully united in Aaltos’ human approach to form a masterclass in absolute harmony.
The residency program includes an individual work studio space in the master building and a shared dormitory type of accommodation with one’s own bedroom in the adjacent building.
The Paimio Sanatorium Residency program and its content may by updated and we will reserve the right for changes time to time.
Summer residency program is open from the end of May to late August. The applications are reviewed by a committee to ensure that a broad range of artistic disciplines, styles, and national origins is represented. The selection process aims to integrate artists and researchers in a spirit of openness and curiosity about creativity in its diverse forms and contexts.
