Step into the fascinating masterpiece of functionalism by Alvar and Aino Aalto. The Paimio Sanatorium (1929-1933), which was built with the principles of humane modernism, is perhaps the world’s best-known Finnish building. The warm atmosphere and characteristic feel of the place has carried the Sanatorium through decades of change. The building and its surrounding nature has been designed to be a healing element in itself.
You can visit the Sanatorium by taking part in the tours and visiting the exhibitions.
The outside can be explored freely or by following the Architectural Path organized around the building. There is also a Nature Path that takes you to the surrounding pine forest which is an integral part of the complex.
During the visiting hours, Restaurant Toivo welcomes you to enjoy the lunch, dinner or just a cup of coffee.

The guided tours take you on a journey into the architecture, innovations, and everyday life of Paimio Sanatorium. The tour consists of a guided tour of the different floors and rooms of the sanatorium and a visit to the exhibitions.
Tours are held in Finnish and in English.

Access to the exhibition is included in the guided tour ticket price.
Restaurant Toivo is located on the second floor of the Sanatorium’s main building. It offers a changing lunch menu made from local, seasonal produce and primarily Finnish ingredients, as well as coffee and cakes.
We also provide catering services for meetings and events, tailored to your preferences.
The building itself is very special also from outside. You can explore the exterior on your own by walking in the yard or following the Architectural path which gives you extra information and fun facts about the building.
Kindly note that Architectural path is available on Summer season only.

The surrounding pine forrest is also an essential part of the Sanatorium complex. The Paimio Sanatorium Nature trail, operated by Sanatorium Forest Association, (2,6 km) takes the visitor to the sanatorium’s fairytale forest, where a clear-water creek is bubbling amidst mossy rocks.

Does Museum card apply? Can I pay with cash? Can I use cultural vouchers?
Only card payment is accepted for tours of the Paimio Sanatorium, accommodation and shopping. Cash, Museum card or vouchers are not applicable.
Can I visit the Sanatorium with a pet?
You cannot visit the main building or Restaurant Toivo with your pet, with the exception of guide dogs. On the other hand, we do have pet-friendly accommodation rooms.
Is there an electric car charging point in the Sanatorium?
Unfortunately, we do not have charging points on the Sanatorium premises. The nearest points can be found in the centre of Paimio.
How can I book a place for a guided tour?
The easiest way to book a place is directly through our website. Select the desired tour from the list and go to the booking calendar by pressing “book here”. In the reservation calendar, you can view tour schedules in more detail and make a reservation. The reservation must be paid at the booking stage. It is also possible to make a reservation through our customer service.

We store found items for one month, you can enquire about found items from our customer service.
Can I photograph in the Sanatorium?
On the Sanatorium premises and on the tour, you are free to take pictures for your own use. Pictures for commercial use must be agreed in advance with the sales service.
What can I experience for free?
You can visit the lobby of the Sanatorium, Restaurant Toivo and the showroom of the city of Paimio for free. The Sanatorium garden, the architecture trail and the Sanatorium path are also free to explore.
How do I get to the Sanatorium?
The Sanatorium is accessible by car or public transport. See more detailed arrival instructions below.
Can I visit or stay over outside opening hours?
You can visit and stay over in the Sanatorium all year round, even if there are no guided public tours. Please let us know your arrival time in advance, with advance notice you can arrive to accomodate around the clock.

Near the main entrance there are two parking areas where visitors can park freely. Busses have designated parking area.
Regional bus trips from Turku centre take about an hour. Lines 705 and 706 arrive in front of Paimio Sanatorium, lines 703 and 704 stop in the centre of Paimio, a short 3 km walk or taxi ride away.
Bus services from Helsinki arrive at exit 11 of national road 1 / E18. The stop is called “Paimio th L” and located about 5 km from Paimio Sanatorium, which can be walked or bridged by taxi.
